Vastking Kingbook K100 Review –

Our technology world has made leaps and bounds in the past year since we’ve first held a gaming device to our ear. Although the capabilities have been there, they’ve been somewhat concealed behind the veil of console dominance. However, since the advent of the Nintendo Switch, the world of mobile gaming has finally been able to shed its pesky shell and emerge into the open. This process has been far from a simple one, but thanks to the latest mobile powerhouse, the Vastking Kingbook K100, everything has suddenly become clear.

Vastking has been around for a while, and has released a large number of gaming notebooks in addition to their “Kingbook” line of giant laptop/tablet hybrids. The K100 is the latest in their line, and certainly the biggest. The specs are definitely of a gaming laptop, with a GTX 1050 GPU, a Core i7-6700HQ CPU, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 1 TB HDD. The design is fairly modern, but the keyboard and touchpad are not backlit, and the trackpad is rather small; the touchpad can be used for gesture functionality, which is nice. The keyboard is good, though, with chiclet-style keys and a solid feel. There

Today we take a look at the Vastking Kingbook K100 laptop. This 14-inch device tries to pack a lot of great features into a small package and costs just $399.99.

Most of you probably know Vastking from your tablets and smartphones, so in this review we find out if your latest laptop can handle the quality.

Unpacking

When you open the box, you will find a laptop, a quick start guide, and a spy webcam protector and charger. It seems that the charger is only sold with a US plug.

So if you order this laptop in Europe, you will need an adapter. If pink is not your favorite color, don’t worry. There is also a gray color option.

Quality of construction

The build quality is good. For this price, you can’t expect the best of the best. The flexibility of the chassis is well worth the price.

I’ve seen far worse for more money. This laptop is made entirely of plastic and therefore feels very light.

The keyboard betrays the low price the most. It is soft, and typing is not satisfactory if you are used to a better keyboard. The keys are also completely different, the ticking sound emphasizes this.

The keyboard layout is pretty standard, with even normal-sized arrow keys. Overall, the keyboard could have been better, but for this price it’s worth it.

Touch screen

The touchpad is surprisingly good. At 12.5 x 6.5 inches, it’s very large for a 14-inch device. It uses Microsoft’s precision touchpad drivers, so multi-finger movements work very well.

A numeric keypad is printed on the touchpad, which can be activated with the finger on the left side of the touchpad. You can right-click by touching with two fingers or by clicking on the bottom right. Overall, the touch screen is very user-friendly.

However, if you plan to use an external mouse with your laptop, you can disable the touchpad with one of the keyboard function keys.

Show

The 14-inch screen offers good image quality with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. The screen frame is quite thin, which is nice.

Vastking lists a brightness of 220 nits, which is slightly lower than the usual 300 nits of most laptops. The screen brightness is good indoors, but don’t expect to use this laptop comfortably outdoors.

Vastking also claims to cover 72% of the NTSC color space, which at this price is a good thing. The colors and viewing angles are pretty good thanks to the IPS screen. Unfortunately, I notice quite a bit of discoloration on the screen when viewing dark images.

Power

The Kingbook K100 loses out a bit in this category. The Intel Celeron N4020 is a dual-core SoC that was released in late 2019. It offers 2 cores, no hyperthreading and a core frequency of 1.1 to 2.8 GHz.

It is only meant for light office work or surfing the internet. Doing anything else may cause the laptop to fail, as true multitasking is limited.

For example, when I set up the laptop for this test, I installed all available Windows updates and within minutes the machine was 100% up-and-running.

The system stopped responding; I could do nothing during this process. Here are some benchmarks to help you compare performance:

Intel Celeron N4020:

  • Cinebench R15 (Multi-Core): 144 points
  • Cinebench R15 (single core): 79 points
  • Geekbench 5.3, 64bit (multi-core) : 858

AMD Ryzen 3 3200U:

  • Cinebench R15 (Multi-Core): 335 points
  • Cinebench R15 (single core): 128 points
  • Geekbench 5.3, 64bit (multi-core): 1661 points

The AMD Ryzen 3 3200U chip is sold in laptops in the same price range, but is almost twice as powerful. Same story with the graphics card on both SoCs. If good performance at a low price is important to you, then this unit is not for you.

If you want to use this laptop only for light internet browsing and office activities, it is suitable for you, provided you have a little patience from time to time. The comfort of the K100 is that it is quiet and does not heat up during use.

Poor performance is also probably why the K100 uses Windows 10S, which is designed for low-end devices.

In this version you can only download applications from the Windows Store and the Edge browser is installed by default. However, you can upgrade to the regular version of Windows 10 if you want.

Ports

On the left side of the K1000 you’ll find a USB-A port, a charging port, a mini-HDMI port and a USB Type-C port.

On the right side is another USB-A port, as well as a headphone jack and a micro-SD slot. Unfortunately, the USB-C port does not support Display Port output or charging.

I find it odd that Vastking didn’t use a standard, full-size HDMI connector. Therefore, you need a special cable or adapter for HDMI displays.

Battery

Vastking estimates the battery life of this device to be no more than 8 hours. This seems fine if you are using the screen at half brightness and the processor is not working.

This is a good result.  Since the maximum brightness is already quite low, it can only be reduced by the father in poor lighting conditions. Unfortunately, the K100 doesn’t support USB-C charging. If you ever forget your charger, you’re probably out of luck.

Moreover, the processor is so weak that many basic tasks already exhaust the processor and drain the battery unnecessarily. Fortunately, the charger is very light and easy to carry.

Summary

Some aspects of the Vastking KingBook K100 are really good for its price. The touchpad is really excellent. It’s large, easy to use and the multi-finger movements work perfectly. The number of ports is correct, as is the battery life.

IPS screens offer good viewing angles, but a brighter screen would have been clearly better. So far, so good. Unfortunately, the execution leaves much to be desired. However, in some cases the extra power is not needed, and for those people this laptop may be a good choice.
